CONCERTS SCHEDULED FOR MONTGOMERY PARK

The Old Town North Community Partnership in cooperation with the Alexandria Department of Recreation and Parks is reviving the summer concert series. We are scheduled for three concerts in Montgomery Park this year. All concerts are free and open to all residents, employees, and business owners in Old Town North:

  • Thursday, May 19, 6 to 7pm – Stephen Samuel, jazz/Caribbean
  • Wednesday, July 20, 7 to 8 pm: DC Project/Dave Cosby
  • Wednesday, August 3 – Richard Walton Quintet

The May 19 concert will be paired with a special community event, the “Taste of Old Town North,” featuring food provided by some of OTN’s 19 fine eateries. We are looking for volunteers to help with the event. If you can help, please call Elizabeth Frommer at 703-836-8066.

WMATA SEEKS DEVELOPER FOR BUS BARN ON ROYAL STREET

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) recently issued a Joint Development Solicitation for Transit-Oriented Development for the Royal Street bus garage that occupies one full city block (slightly more than 2 acres) bounded by Wythe Street, Pendleton Street, North Pitt Street, and North Royal Street. The bus maintenance garage services 82 buses. The site is zoned RM, which allows townhouses up to 30 units per acre. Developers are required to propose an alternative site of at least five acres to relocate the bus maintenance facility.

Additional information is available from Metro’s web site, www.wmata.com, the City’s Planning Department at 703-838-4666, or WMATA’s Jo Ann Harrison at 202-962-2395.

OF NOTE…

If you didn’t see MetroStage’s production, “The All Night Strut“, which closed on March 27, you missed a great show. Two productions remain on the schedule for this season: “Sophocles’ Electra”, April 21-May 29; and “The Last Five Years”, June 15-July 24. Metro Stage is at 1201 N. Royal Street. Tickets are $32 to $38 and may be obtained by calling 1-800-494-8497 or going to www.boxofficetickets.com. To complete your evening out, try dinner at Café Marianna, next door!

The Braddock Road Metro Station area is soon to be the focus of a comprehensive study by the Planning Department. While this area is outside our neighborhood, what happens there could easily affect us. Several redevelopment proposals are expected in the future, and one is currently under review that could include a Harris Teeter grocery store. A community meeting is planned for Tuesday, April 19 at 7 pm. For further information, contact the Department of Planning and Zoning at 703-838-4666.
